Early Orthodontic Treatment

The Turkish Dental Association recommends visiting the family dentist as soon as the child’s milk teeth erupt. This visit in early childhood is very important for the child to acquire a lifelong tooth brushing habit. Although most orthodontic treatment begins in the 9-14 age group, the child’s first orthodontic examination should be performed when the child is 7 years old, after the upper and lower incisors have changed.Early Orthodontic Treatment

Even if the teeth are aligned properly, there may be a problem with the bite. Orthodontists can notice problems with jaw development and permanent teeth during this period.

Being seen in the pre-pubertal period between the ages of 7-10 allows the child's skeletal problems to be corrected during this period. After the post-pubertal growth spurt, it will be even more difficult to correct such problems. If the problem is only caused by the teeth, treatment can be easily done after puberty, between the ages of 11-14.

What is the best time to start orthodontic treatment?

Although orthodontists can treat at any age, there is an optimal period for starting orthodontic treatment. This is the period when the most effective and shortest treatment will be provided. The most recommended age to take your child to the orthodontist for the first time is 7. Treatment may not be necessary at this early age, but after a good examination, a decision on the most appropriate period to start treatment can be made.

What are the benefits of early orthodontic examination?

Early orthodontic examination helps to detect existing problems in advance and to correct them in a shorter time. Depending on the cause of the problem, the orthodontist may take the patient for periodic check-ups and wait for treatment to begin at the most appropriate period of growth and development. Not every problem detected at an early stage means that your child needs early orthodontic treatment.

If you see the following problems in your child, you should take him to the orthodontist as soon as possible:

• Early or late tooth loss
• Difficulty biting or chewing
• Mouth breathing
• Thumb sucking
• Crowding, incisors lined up one behind the other
• Shifting jaws
• Difficulty making certain sounds
• Jaws positioned too far forward or back
• Excessive clenching or grinding of teeth

These special problems are those that need to be treated early. Early treatment is especially important for your child to gain self-confidence.
